Mahalaya at the British Museum - September 2006
The British Museum, working with the Crafts Council of West Bengal is organising an installation of “Durga: creating an image of the goddess” in the Great Court from 12 August to 27 September, 2006. This programme is being hosted under the banner of "Voices of Bengal". The Durga image made made by craftspersons from Bengal will feature in a community based Mahalaya programme of Sunday 24 September 2006 at 10:00 AM.

The celebration will open with the dhak (drums), played by dhakis (drummers) from Kolkata at the Great Court in front of Devi Durga. This will be followed by invocation dance sequences presented by Tanuka Saha, Urbi Basu and Alinda Barua of the Tagoreans.

The celebration forms a part of the unique project undertaken by the British Museum to create a magnificient image of the goddess Durga fashioned onsite by craftsmen from West Bengal. The project also offers opportunity to view exhibitions on Myths of Bengal and paintings by Rabindranath Tagore.
